Gulliver’s Travels
July 28, 2011
A few weeks ago, we lost a baby bull in the field. We looked everywhere, through the tall grass, around the fence line, and in the surrounding pastures, not a sign. Josh and I decided to continue searching the next day, and brought the mother and her other calf in the barn for the night.
Right after chores the next morning, we led the mother and calf out to pasture again. Not minutes after we led them out, we saw our herd of dry cows walking in a group from the back field. We watched curiously as they made their way towards us in huddle formation. It wasn’t long until we saw what they were protecting. The little missing bull was in the middle of all of them slowly but surely walking along back to us. Josh and I watched in amusement. The dry cows had found the baby bull who must have slipped under the fence the previous evening, and watched over him for the night. Lucky for his babysitters, the little bull calf, who Josh named “Gulliver” returned safe and sound.
It’s moments like these that remind us how nurturing our Jerseys are. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on Gulliver’s future travels.
